How much time should I allow to migrate data between services?

When you move data between two Pulsed Media services, keep both services active and overlapping for at least 7 days, and do not schedule the old service to cancel until you have confirmed everything arrived on the new one. Allow a minimum of 3 days of remaining time on the old service before you even start.

The short version

  • Overlap for 7+ days run both services side by side while the transfer completes and you verify it.
  • 3 days minimum to start never begin a migration if the old service has less than 3 days left.
  • Cancel the old service last only after your data is confirmed complete on the new one.

Why so much time, if the transfer could finish in hours?

The hours figure is the best case, and a data move only has to go wrong once. Real transfers slow down unpredictably a folder of small files can drop the speed to a crawl for a while before it recovers. Reboots or connection drops can interrupt a copy and require a restart. Verifying that everything arrived takes real time. And if anything needs a look from support, that adds time too. A margin measured in days absorbs all of it without ever putting your data at risk.

Your old service is your safety net

A migration is a copy, not a move. Nothing is deleted from your old service during the transfer, so your data lives in two places at once for the whole overlap. As long as the old service is running, a slow or incomplete transfer costs you time, never data. Keep it until you are certain the new service has everything then retire it.
