rtorrent settings

There's been lately a few complains over poor performance on particular servers, and we have found the cause: rTorrent settings. Some users have decided to abuse our good faith and the good faith of the fellow seedbox users by attempting to use more than their fair share, causing complete performance degradation for the server in question.

There's a solid reason why we have chosen the settings we have, and opted to write-protect from users the .rtorrent.rc file. There's still some settings you can change, but for the general part, you are not allowed to make setting changes at all.

Why is it so? you may ask. That's because we've put an effort to make the service good for everyone, not just a single abuser of the server wanting to grab 100% of server resources, or those who think they can make a better configuration for rTorrent.

Approximately 100% of the time a user changes rTorrent's performance related settings the performance is killed for everyone else in the server, causing suboptimal service or simply performance for everyone is ruined.

Want to change rTorrent configuration? Get an dedicated server. A semidedicated service is shared with other people, and users simply have to respect other users privilege to the server resources as well.

Write-protection is not going to go anywhere. It's for everyones protection, including yours and thus everyone gets their fair share.

If you want more performance, you can upgrade to bigger plan, these do not just offer facevalue enhancements, but actually higher bandwidth as well. Generally speaking medium offers 2-3x times the transfer of a small, and large offers 4-6x the transfer of 2009+ small. Of course it also depends on how you use the service, and for some users there's no benefit in upgrading as there's not enough leechers for their torrents to use the extra available bandwidth.

New servers for the past few weeks already have had their .rtorrent.rc files write-protected.
